Title: Tenugui (Hand Towel)
Date: 1993
Medium: Giclée on Paper
Size: 21cm x 30cm
Edition: 99
This is one of four images I did as part of a series, depicting Japanese garments within the pages of a book.
In this artwork, the text chronicles the tenugui, which are thin cotton towels for wiping your hands after washing them, or wiping the sweat from your brow on a hot day. They are about 35 cm wide and 90 cm long, and are often used as headbands or for wrapping bottles and similar items.
The series is meant to be an ironic statement about the Japanese shunga or erotic imagery. It is under the guise of a book, meant to promote fashion, but is really expounding eroticism.
