Title: Shi (Death)
Date: 2000
Medium: Various Japanese Papers, Giclée on Paper
Size: 49cm x 45cm
Edition: 99
This is the third artwork in a series about birth, marriage and death, that I created with handmade paper and digital images.
It was inspired by kimonos that I saw while shopping in Japan.
I chose a black kimono to represent death, because it is a Japanese custom, and added a lantern-ghost (chochinobake) for dramatic effect.
I have used a digital image, I created in Inkscape, for the inside artwork. I have then used origami to fold the Kimono and both the image and kimono have been placed on traditional Japanese papers.
