Title: Kekkon (Marriage)
Date: 2000
Medium: Various Japanese Papers, Giclée on Paper
Size: 49cm x 45cm
Edition: 99

This is the second artwork in a series about birth, marriage and death, that I created with handmade paper and digital images.

It was inspired by kimonos that I saw while shopping in Japan.

I chose a red kimono to represent marriage, not because it is a Japanese custom, but because red is often associated with joy, happiness and endurance in Japanese culture.

The couple were inspired by erotic Ukiyo-e images (pictures of the floating world).

I used a digital image, I created in Inkscape, for the image. I then used origami to fold the Kimono and both the image and kimono are placed on traditional Japanese papers.
