Chang'e and her husband Houyi were immortals living in heaven. One day, the ten sons of the Jade Emperor transformed into ten suns, causing the Earth to burn. The Jade Emperor asked Houyi for his help to save it.

Houyi, was a skilled archer, and was able to kill 9 of the sons, leaving only one to warm the earth. However, the Jade Emperor was unhappy that 9 of his sons were killed, so he banned both to live on earth as mortals.

Houyi decided to go on a journey to find the Pill of Immortality. He eventually found it, but was told that the one pill needed to be divided between the two of them.

Not knowing this knowledge, Chang'e took the whole pill. Due to the overdose, she floated to the Moon. There she met a large jade rabbit, which manufactures elixirs, and to this day continues to keep her company.
