Title: Play it Again, Sam
Date: 1991
Medium: Hand Coloured Etching
Size: 72cm x 50cm
Edition: 99

This image was created as a pun on the Cat Organ.

This device supposedly had cat tails attached to keys so that when they were depressed by a human player, the cats' tails were pulled and their screeches made a cacophony of sound. So, my artwork is a parody of a cat playing a human piano.

The title is from the movie Casablanca and although these words were never really spoken, it seemed an appropriate title.

The surrounding images are a brief testament to how cats have been viewed in history.

The top left and middle images depict the Egyptian cat as a serpent killer, the top right is of a cat woman and is based on the belief that some women were able to transform themselves into cats and would kill humans for their food.

The bottom left image is Sekhmet, who, in some interpretations, has one eye as the moon and the other as the sun.

The image of the cat on the gravestone is based on a story in England about a cat who so loved her mistress that when she died, she sat on her grave every night. When the cat finally died, its ghost continued to sit and guard the grave.

The bottom right image depicts a cat suckling a witch's breast. Letting a familiar suckle was meant to give eternal life to the witch.

The script reads…?????
